Fellow Eagles,

Our hearts and minds are heavily burdened by the pointless police killing of Mr. George Floyd. Like you, I am deeply saddened, frustrated and angry, and I condemn Mr. Floyd’s killing.

With Mr. Floyd’s death, we are reminded yet again of the persistent racism, hatred and ignorance that have claimed far too many lives and threaten people of color on a daily basis in our country.

We are all worthy and precious, regardless of our backgrounds or ideological differences. In times of sorrow, our shared humanity must bring us together. Violence is never the solution, but we also cannot stand idly by. In turbulent times, self-reflection and education can be keys to positive change. Please ask yourselves how you can leverage your particular connections, skills and knowledge to make a positive difference – and how unconscious bias may affect your judgments. Study the issues. Listen carefully to, and support others who have been affected by the scourge of racism or bias of any kind.

At this institution of discovery and higher learning, let us all seek out and seize opportunities to demonstrate kindness and respect for others. May we leverage our Eagle spirit to cherish each member of the Embry-Riddle family. May we be of service to our friends, our neighbors and our nation.

Forever an Eagle.

P. Barry Butler, Ph.D.
