Hurricane Isaias Update for the Daytona Beach Campus

Student Union to Close Ahead of Hurricane Isaias’ Approach
As Embry‑Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus continues to monitor the path of Hurricane Isaias, which is currently making landfall on Northern Andros Island and is expected to approach the southeast coast of Florida this weekend, the Mori Hosseini Student Union will be closed effective 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, with plans to reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, for normal business hours.
As of the National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. EDT public advisory on Saturday, Aug. 1, the storm had hurricane-force winds extending outward 25 miles and tropical-storm force winds for 115 miles.
Students are advised to shelter in place throughout the duration of the storm. To-go meals from the Student Union will be made available for student pick-up this evening, due to the closure.
The aircraft fleet will be secured in hangars or tied down. No plans for relocation are in place at this time.
Facilities will prepare sand bags for doors and secure any potential projectiles. In addition to patrolling campus throughout the storm to report any damages or hazardous conditions, Campus Safety will continue to monitor the storm’s trajectory, in cooperation with Volusia County Emergency Management, and report any changes to the forecast.
All students should have an evacuation plan in place now. Log onto ERNIE and go to the Hurricane Preparation page (direct link: https://ernie.erau.edu/Departments/dean-of-students-daytona/Pages/Hurricane-Preparation.aspx). The university is currently housing students enrolled in summer courses.
We will continue to carefully monitor the storm and provide updates on Isaias and its impacts, as needed. Updates will be posted to the Embry‑Riddle Newsroom as well as the University’s internal web portal (ERNIE) and the Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page.

Update for July 31, 2020
Hurricane Isaias Predicted to Bring Heavy Rain, High Winds to Florida
With Hurricane Season Underway, Students Urged to Update Evacuation Plans Now
Embry‑Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus Safety team has been consulting with faculty meteorologists and closely watching the progression of Isaias, which is currently categorized as a category 1 hurricane as it moves over portions of the Bahamas with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, moving northwest at 16 miles per hour.
As of the National Hurricane Center’s 11:00 a.m. EDT public advisory on Friday, July 31, the storm had hurricane-force winds extending outward 35 miles and tropical-storm force winds for 205 miles.
The storm may weaken and/or shift to the east by the time it passes Central Florida, but the Daytona Beach Campus is currently located within the “cone of uncertainty” for Isaias, and therefore the Emergency Operations Team is monitoring it.
At this time, the storm is expected to approach Florida’s East Coast on Saturday. The National Hurricane Center currently predicts that the Daytona Beach area will experience heavy rain and high winds as early as 8:00 p.m. Saturday and throughout the day on Sunday.
