With the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will now provide novel ways to expose high school students in Sri Lanka to aviation and aerospace education. Gateway College will extend these opportunities not only to their students but also to anyone who is passionate to make a difference and fulfil their dreams of learning to fly.

As part of the MOU, Embry-Riddle faculty will visit Gateway College twice a year to conduct interactive workshops on aviation related topics. As a first step, Embry-Riddle Worldwide aviation professors will travel to Sri Lanka in September 2017 to conduct an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Workshop for advanced high school students. There will also be general presentations and demonstrations of UAVs (drones) to large audiences of middle school students.

Plans also include an aviation/aerospace related student competition to design flying machines among the Gateway group of schools and colleges, where the winners will be provided the opportunity to visit the Embry-Riddle Asia campus in Singapore.

Through this agreement, aviation enthusiasts in Sri Lanka will have the opportunity to attend summer camps at the Embry-Riddle Singapore campus beginning in July 2018. During summer camp, students will attend classes on aeronautics and aviation business taught by Embry-Riddle faculty, and participate in visits to companies in the aviation industry to understand their operations and meet senior aviation professionals.

Plans also include assisting students in enrolling in free/paid beginner-level online learning programs; include Embry-Riddle’s Aviation 101, a free online introductory course that gives students a chance to learn the fundamentals of aviation. This course encompasses nine video lessons, which introduce students to aircraft systems, aerodynamics, flight instruments, airports, airspace, radio communication, air traffic control, aeromedical, aviation weather and performance and navigation.

The MOU will also facilitate students of Gateway in progressing to Embry-Riddle's bachelor’s degree programs after completing the advanced level or the International Foundation Diploma offered by Gateway Graduate School.
