Two representatives from Sony Electronics Inc. were on campus Thursday to officially meet with and thank the Software Engineering Senior Design Team, who chose Sony's Digital Paper product as part of its project. “Sony is delighted to work with Embry-Riddle and make possible the work of this senior design team,” said Daniel Albohn, Sony Global Business Development for Digital Paper Solutions.

The Digital Paper system is a digital hand-held platform based on eInk’s 13.3" Mobius electronic paper display (EPD) with an electromagnetic stylus. It has potential application across many industries, especially when there’s a need or desire to reduce paper use, secure your information, and collaborate. It operates as a reader and document creator, all with editing capabilities that make files living documents and sharable as a PDF. Sony strategically launched the product two years ago and is exploring ways to increase functionality for additional markets such as academics and research.

The team received three Digital Paper systems, which were donated by Sony. Based on the constraints of the device, the team developed a design document focused on usage in academics. They identified additional applications for the system that would add functionality and integrate with the device using third-party applications.

“We appreciate the recommendations from the team. Their input is very valuable and helps to inform the future of the product,” said Albohn. “We are visiting today because we want them to know the outcome of their effort has been recognized. We’re very impressed with the quality and detail of the students’ work. It’s representative of the caliber of students, faculty, and facilities here at Embry-Riddle.”

The student team included: Stephanie Ross, senior in Electrical Engineering; Christian Gibbs, senior in Software Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, and Dylan Schindler, senior in Software Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Brian Davis was the Senior Design course coordinator and Dr. Akhan Almagambetov was the design team advisor.

“I’m glad we chose this project. It’s a good thing for the school to begin bridging a relationship with Sony,” said Gibbs.

Schindler agrees. “It’s a great thing for us to see this technology. We see a lot of avionics, so working with consumer electronics is great and makes us even more diverse.”

“After working on this project, yes, I’m very interested in a career with Sony,” said Ross.

“I’ve been very impressed with the enthusiasm and results of this team,” said Almagambetov. “Digital paper has great potential in academics and the students produced high-quality work. It is my hope that we can develop additional ways to collaborate with Sony.”
