Embry-Riddle Book Drive Seeks Children's and Young Adult Books for Community Recipients
For the fourth consecutive year-- and in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and “Read Across America Day,” members of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will be sponsoring a book drive to benefit young readers in our community, partnering with Yavapai County Free Library District and Sacred Heart Catholic School.
Those who wish to donate new or slightly used books for school-aged children (please, no textbooks) can drop them off at collection bins located at Embry-Riddle’s Hazy Library or Jack L. Hunt Student Union. The book drive ends April 15.
“Phi Kappa Phi’s motto is ‘Let the Love of Learning Rule Humanity’ -- Our students believe that by providing books to underfunded schools, libraries and organizations, they can empower young people in a culture of reading and knowledge,” said Dr. Anne Boettcher, Embry-Riddle Honors Program Director. “Those same children will help build a prosperous and literate nation.”
The last three PKP/Embry-Riddle book drives have collected more than 7,000 books. Some of the past recipients include Kids Need to Read, the Tuba City Library, and the Window Rock Library. About 5,000 of those books were raised for the Central Mosul Library in Iraq in 2017, after ISIS had destroyed the facility. Government and Library officials in Mosul issued a letter of thanks and gratitude to Embry-Riddle and the Prescott community following that book drive.
“We’re hoping for another great book drive this year and just can’t thank the Prescott community enough for their continued support,” added Boettcher.
