Eagles Ice Hockey Team Wins Conference Championship
The Embry-Riddle Eagles Ice Hockey team has won their conference championship, beating Flagler College, Lynn University and Florida Institute of Technology. The Eagles won in the single elimination East Florida Collegiate Hockey Conference championship tournament, skating at the Daytona International Skateway. The Eagles brought home the Sodexo Cup, which was sponsored by our food services friends here on campus.
Didn't know Embry-Riddle had an ice hockey team? It's not an official athletic team, but a student club, in a new conference that is part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), with our conference teams playing in Division 3. As such, the team is open to all hockey-loving students at Embry-Riddle, regardless of gender. Any students interested in becoming involved with the team should contact Dr. Ken Byrnes, the faculty advisor for the team. Byrnes is the Department Chair of the ERAU Flight Department, and has served as the faculty advisor for the team for the past two years.
The coach of the Embry-Riddle Eagles Ice Hockey team is former NHL professional hockey player Bob Joyce, a Quality Assurance Manager in the Flight Training department. Joyce played for the Canadian Olympic hockey team and at Left Wing for the Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, with a playing career lasting from 1988 to 2000.
The ACHA has 131 teams nationwide split into four divisions. The Eagles compete in the south division with 43 other teams including Florida State, Auburn, Clemson, etc.
