Daytona Beach Campus to Open 8 a.m. Saturday

A comprehensive inspection of campus building and infrastructure at the Daytona Beach Campus has been completed by our Safety & Security and Facilities Management Departments. The campus weathered the storm without any physical damage and we will now open campus on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. This includes all residence halls, which opened Wednesday, Sept. 4, and the Mori Hosseini Student Union.

The Emergency Operations team reminds anyone returning to campus Saturday and Sunday to put safety first. If you encounter any problems or concerns once back on campus, please contact our Safety and Security Department.

We will return to normal operations on Monday morning. Should anyone have questions about a particular department or area please contact them directly.

The Women’s Soccer team invites everyone in the Daytona Beach area to join them for their first home game Saturday at 6:30 p.m., against Columbus State.

Our fleet of Cessna 172 Skyhawks and Diamond DA42 L360s is returning from Alabama to DAB today. Read about the relocation of our training fleet, the evacuation of campus and a dog named Jasper in the Washington Post.

We once again thank everyone for their help and support during the campus closure and we especially appreciate the Embry-Riddle students who generously gave their time to help their peers, and all the families who kindly hosted displaced students during the storm.

We continue to hold in our hearts those students with families affected by Hurricane Dorian, particularly in the Bahamas, and others who may soon feel the storm’s impacts.

Refocusing on Student Success

With classes scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, Embry-Riddle is already refocusing on students’ success. To help get students back on track for their classes, the Academic Advancement Tutoring Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8.

Also, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence has posted a summary of teaching strategies for faculty to help students make a smooth transition as soon as classes resume on Monday.

The Provost is working with the Faculty Senate and Student Government Association to identify days within the fall schedule when students could make up classes missed this week due to the storm.

Worldwide Campus Closures

The following Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus locations will remain closed until 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, with classes resuming on Monday, Sept. 9: Florida locations in Orlando, Space Coast, Jacksonville – Baymeadows (including the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy program), Jacksonville – Mayport; NAS Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Also closed until further notice are campuses in Savannah / Hunter Army Airfield and Beaufort, Ga.; Charleston, North Charleston and Shaw, S.C.; and MacDill Air Force Base and Tampa, Fla.

For all locations, campus directors are communicating directly with staff and students. Faculty are being instructed to exercise leniency in working with students who may experience power outages due to the hurricane.

Future Updates

Additional information will be distributed to the University community through normal channels. Check the Embry-Riddle Newsroom, ERNIE and the Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page.

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 3:00 p.m.

Embry-Riddle Reopens Residence Halls at 5:00 p.m. Today; All Other Buildings Remain Closed through Sunday at 8:00 a.m.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will reopen residence halls at 5:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 4, but emphasized that all other buildings will remain closed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Very limited dining service will be available in the residence halls. All classes and other activities have been cancelled until campus reopens on Sunday.

After long days of concern about the impacts of Hurricane Dorian, the Embry-Riddle community fortunately remained safe. Dorian passed some 85 miles east of Daytona Beach as a category 2 hurricane. A comprehensive inspection of campus is underway, but it so far appears that storm damage mainly involves landscaping features. Students who had sought refuge in a Volusia County shelter are already safely back on campus.

We continue to hold in our hearts those students with families affected by Hurricane Dorian, particularly in the Bahamas, and others who may soon feel the storm’s impacts.

We commend the outstanding Embry-Riddle students who helped their peers, and we thank all families who graciously hosted displaced students during the storm.

Refocusing on Academic Success

With classes scheduled to resume at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, Embry-Riddle is already refocusing on students’ success. Hurricane Dorian disrupted the start of the fall semester, prompting a campus evacuation after students had been in classes for only a week.

To help get students back on track for their classes, the Academic Advancement Tutoring Center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Also, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence has posted a summary of teaching strategies for faculty to help students make a smooth transition as soon as classes resume on Monday.

The Provost is working with faculty to identify days within the fall schedule when students could make up classes missed this week due to the storm.

In returning to campus, the University reminded all students to put safety first.

Worldwide Campus Closures

The following Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus locations will remain closed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept.

Curfews in Effect as Campus Remains Closed

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus and many Worldwide Campus locations remain closed, with all classes and other activities cancelled, until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. Classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 9.

Students still in the Daytona Beach area are reminded that emergency curfews have been announced for cities and unincorporated areas east of the Halifax River. The curfew extends from 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, and from 6:00 p.m. Wednesday until 6:00 a.m. Thursday. During the curfews, only authorized public safety personnel will be allowed on the roads.

Similarly, only authorized personnel will be allowed on the Daytona Beach Campus while it remains closed. After the storm subsides, Embry-Riddle must ensure safe conditions, with full restoration of water, electricity and all other services before faculty, staff and students return. A plan for making up missed school days will be announced soon after campus reopens.

Now slowly making its way northwest at five miles per hour, Hurricane Dorian is forecast to pass about 85 miles to the east of Volusia County in the late Tuesday through early Wednesday. Sustained tropical winds of 40 miles per hour, gusts up to 60 miles per hour, and rainfall amounts of up to 8 inches can be expected along the coast. Volusia County authorities have cautioned that the storm’s slow progress will prolong impacts and increase the risk of flooding. Any westward wobble in the storm’s path would place Daytona Beach at far greater risk.

Embry-Riddle Shelter Captains Make a Difference

Exemplifying the Eagle spirit, five Embry-Riddle student “shelter captains” volunteered to help ensure the wellbeing of their peers as Hurricane Dorian was approaching Florida’s east coast.

The Ormond Beach Observer highlighted the students’ contributions at a Volusia County shelter located in the David C. Hinson Middle School of Daytona Beach. Shown in the Observer’s photograph are shelter captains (left to right): Albert Bensink, Josiah BichlerShya Lopez, Seth Archie and Stephen McCullough. On Monday, the five shelter captains headed to the shelter along with 31 of their fellow students who had nowhere else to go during the storm.

Lopez told Ormond Beach Observer News Editor Jarleene Almenas that the shelter captains’ decision to volunteer “will show other students that they can also make a difference.”

As Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus remains closed, many in the community have expressed concern for students whose families are in the Bahamas, which suffered a prolonged direct hit by Hurricane Dorian, as well as everyone currently in the storm’s path. For example, Embry-Riddle families set up a Facebook page to promote student-led efforts to help those affected by the hurricane.

Worldwide Campus Closures

The following Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus locations will remain closed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept.

Eagles Helping Eagles – Embry-Riddle Families Promote Assistance for Hurricane-Ravaged Areas

As Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus remains closed due to Hurricane Dorian, our thoughts are with students whose families are in the Bahamas, which has been hit hard by a Category 5 hurricane, as well as all those now in the storm’s path.

Embry-Riddle families have set up a new Facebook page to promote and support student-directed efforts to help those affected by the hurricane. To join the group, go to the ERAU DB Parents Outreach page, select Join Group and answer the survey questions.

The primary Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page can also be used to communicate about post-storm assistance efforts. Students affected by the storm may wish to reach out to their Dean of Students as well to let the University know about their situation.

University Updates

This morning, 31 students, accompanied by five student shelter captains and a dog named Jasper, were transported to a Volusia County shelter at the David C. Hinson Middle School. In addition, members of the Embry-Riddle family volunteered to host 17 students in need of refuge during the storm.

Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus and a number of Worldwide Campus locations are now closed, with all classes and other activities cancelled, until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. Classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 9. Only essential personnel will be allowed on the Daytona Beach Campus, with no exceptions, during the closure.

Hurricane Dorian is currently ravaging the northwestern Bahamas, but it is predicted to turn north and roll up the east coast of the United States. Tropical-force winds, heavy rain and storm surge are expected in Volusia County by late afternoon Tuesday, continuing through Wednesday. High winds could topple trees, damage structures and trigger power outages. After the storm passes, Embry-Riddle's priority will be to ensure safe conditions, with full restoration of water, electricity and all other services before faculty, staff and 7,000 students return to the Daytona Beach Campus.

As soon as possible after the storm, Embry-Riddle will announce a plan to make up the missed school days.

Worldwide Campus Closures

Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus locations that could be affected by Hurricane Dorian will also remain closed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, with classes resuming on Monday, Sept. 9.

The Worldwide campus closures affect Florida locations in Orlando, Space Coast, Jacksonville – Baymeadows (including the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy program), Jacksonville – Mayport; NAS Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Also closed until further notice are campuses in Savannah / Hunter Army Airfield and Beaufort, Ga., and in Charleston and North Charleston, S.C.

In all locations, faculty are being instructed to exercise understanding and leniency in working with students who may experience power outages due to the hurricane.

As Hurricane Dorian evolves, Embry-Riddle Worldwide will continue to monitor weather conditions and may make other announcements, as needed, to ensure everyone’s safety.

Embry-Riddle to Transport Students from New Residence Hall 2 Lobby to Shelter at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2; Mandatory Evacuation Goes into Effect

With Hurricane Dorian currently churning through the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm predicted to skirt Florida’s east coast, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University urged students, staff and faculty to finalize their evacuation plans now.

For on-campus students who have been unable to evacuate, Embry-Riddle will provide transportation to the David C. Hinson Middle School, 1860 N. Clyde Morris Boulevard, the University’s designated shelter in Daytona Beach. Students in need of shelter should board shuttle buses from the New Residence Hall 2 Lobby, next to Apollo Hall, at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. Volusia County will also be providing free Votran bus transportation to shelters along regular bus routes.

Evacuate Now

Embry-Riddle leadership are receiving continuous updates from authorities as well as a team of faculty experts such as meteorologist Dr. Randell Barry, who called Hurricane Dorian an “unprecedented” threat, being the strongest storm on record in the Northern Bahamas, with winds up to 185 miles per hour at its core.

Although Hurricane Dorian is currently predicted to turn north and roll up Florida’s eastern coast, “Daytona Beach remains within the cone of uncertainty and the storm’s path is only about 40 miles offshore,” Barry said. “If Dorian wobbles even slightly to the west, the Daytona Beach area could be dealing with a very serious situation. No one should be complacent or underestimate the risks that we’re facing as this storm approaches Florida.”

Students who are not in need of transportation to a shelter should now be off-campus.

Campus Closures

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus will remain closed from the time Volusia County shelters open on Monday, Sept. 2, until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, with classes resuming on Monday, Sept. 9. All classes and campus activities, including Athletics, have been officially cancelled during the closure.

After the storm passes and the designated Embry-Riddle shelter closes, students who took refuge there will be allowed to return to campus. Other than those students, however, only essential personnel will be allowed on the Daytona Beach Campus, with no exceptions. High winds and heavy rains could topple trees, damage structures and trigger power outages. Embry-Riddle’s primary focus will be to ensure safe conditions, with full restoration of running water, electrical power and all other services before 7,000 students return to the Daytona Beach Campus.

Students will not be penalized for missing classes during the campus closure. Soon after the storm, the Provost will announce a plan for making up school days missed because of the hurricane.

Shelter Information

Specially trained Embry-Riddle student shelter captains will remain with students who evacuate to the shelter. Embry-Riddle will provide students who are headed to a shelter with a boxed lunch. The shelter will provide simple meals, but those with special dietary needs should plan accordingly.

Volusia County recommends only taking essential items since space is limited. Avoid bringing valuables; shelters are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Items recommended to take include prescription medications, snacks or comfort food, eyeglasses, pillow, blanket, extra clothing, toiletry items, flashlight and batteries. The shelter will be set up to assist students with special needs. It will also be pet-friendly.

Daytona Beach Off-Campus Students

All students, both on- and off-campus, are urged to let their families know their evacuation plans as soon as possible, and stay in close contact with loved ones.

Daytona Beach Campus students who reside off-campus are encouraged to make use of the following resources:

Updates will be posted to the Embry-Riddle Newsroom as well as the University’s internal web portal (ERNIE) and the Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page.

Worldwide Campus Closures

Embry-Riddle Worldwide campuses that could be affected by Hurricane Dorian will also remain closed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, with classes resuming on Monday, Sept. 9.

The Worldwide campus closures affect locations in Orlando, Space Coast, Jacksonville – Baymeadows (including the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy program), Jacksonville – Mayport; NAS Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

In all locations, faculty are being instructed to exercise understanding and leniency in working with students who may experience power outages as Hurricane Dorian impacts Florida.

As Hurricane Dorian evolves, Embry-Riddle Worldwide will continue to monitor weather conditions along the entire eastern coast of the United States and may make other announcements, as needed, to ensure everyone’s safety. Worldwide leadership has been in direct contact with campuses along the Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina coasts.

Eagles Helping Eagles

Embry-Riddle leadership commended students and their families who have been reaching out to help each other find safe shelter as the storm draws closer to Florida. “I’ve been inspired to see many examples of the Eagle spirit of service to others,” President P. Barry Butler said. “Families are reaching out on social media to offer spare rooms to displaced students. Students are touching base with each other to make sure everyone has a ride to a safe location. Nearly 70 of our outstanding flight instructors helped relocate our fleet of aircraft to Alabama. Many staff and faculty members have been very busy helping students and battening down the campus. At times like this, we can all take pride in the way that our community pulls together.”

Look for Regular Updates

Updates will be posted to the Embry-Riddle Newsroom as well as the University’s internal web portal (ERNIE) and the Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page. Embry-Riddle Extends Campus Closures as Hurricane Dorian’s Path Shifts

To ensure students stay safe as Hurricane Dorian is currently expected to generate high winds and heavy rains along Florida’s east coast, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus will extend its campus closure until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, with classes resuming on Monday, Sept. 9.

Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus headquarters in Daytona Beach as well as Worldwide campuses in Orlando and at all locations along Florida’s east coast will follow the same closure schedule.

The Daytona Beach Campus will be under a mandatory evacuation as soon as Volusia County Emergency Management opens shelters. Once the designated Embry-Riddle shelter closes, only students who took refuge there will be allowed to return to campus. Dining services will be provided for them.

Other than those students, only essential personnel will be allowed on the Daytona Beach Campus, with no exceptions. All classes and campus activities, including Athletics, are officially cancelled. Students who are not in need of a shelter should now be off-campus.

The David C. Hinson Middle School, 1860 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach, will serve as Embry-Riddle’s designated shelter. The shelter will open on Monday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. The University is communicating directly with students who plan to use the shelter.

Students will not be penalized for missing classes during the campus closure. The Provost will work closely with the faculty to ensure that academic progress and student success are not compromised by the campus closure. An announcement will be made that explains how school days missed because of the hurricane will be made up during the fall semester.

Fleet Relocation

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus has now safely relocated a fleet of 67 aircraft, flown by 67 flight instructors, to Alabama. Auburn University is hosting 58 of Embry-Riddle’s Cessna 172 aircraft, while Golden Eagle Aviation is providing shelter for 9 Diamond DA-42 aircraft.

Friday, Aug. 30, 4:00 p.m.

As Storm Slows, Embry-Riddle Extends Mandatory Evacuation Time, Closes Additional Campuses and Plans for Fleet Relocation

With a focus on safety first, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has announced plans to close its Daytona Beach Campus as well as its Worldwide headquarters campus located in Daytona Beach, and campuses in Orlando and all east coast Florida locations beginning at 5:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, as Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida.

Embry-Riddle continues to closely monitor the storm as it evolves. The University tentatively plans to reopen its Daytona Beach Campus at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, with classes resuming on Thursday, Sept. 5. If the closure needs to be extended due to changing conditions, an update will be distributed as soon as possible.

Evacuation Time and Procedures – Daytona Beach Campus

Because Hurricane Dorian has slowed in its approach to Florida, landfall will happen later than originally expected. Volusia County Emergency Management has therefore decided to open shelters later.

The mandatory evacuation time for the Daytona Beach Campus will be extended to coincide with Volusia County shelter openings. A specific time will be announced as soon as the shelter-opening time is known.

Dining services will be provided to students until shelters open. Students who are able to evacuate are encouraged to do so now. Please note that Daytona Beach Campus students preparing to leave their residence halls should not tape up windows or turn off circuit breakers to their rooms. Doing so interferes with post-hurricane restoration of services.

Shelter Information

For Daytona Beach Campus residential students who are unable to evacuate, Embry-Riddle will offer shuttle buses to a shelter being set up at the David C. Hinson Middle School, 1860 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., in Daytona Beach as the shelter for Embry-Riddle students. A shuttle bus pickup time and date will be announced soon.

Fleet Relocation Plan

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus is preparing to relocate 67 small aircraft to Alabama, where the planes will be hosted by Auburn University (58 Cessna 172 aircraft) and Golden Eagle Aviation (9 Diamond DA-42 aircraft). “We’re tremendously grateful to our hosts for providing a safe haven for the Embry-Riddle fleet,” said Dr. Ken Byrnes, Flight Department chair. “I would also like to thank all of the dedicated flight instructor-pilots whose commitment to safety and professionalism inspires us all.”

Additional Worldwide Campus Closures

Along with campuses in Orlando and Space Coast, Embry-Riddle Worldwide today announced closures for its campuses in Jacksonville – Baymeadows (including the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy program); Jacksonville – Mayport; NAS Jacksonville; Fort Lauderdale; and Miami. All campuses will close today, Friday, Aug. 30, at 5:00 p.m. Classes are expected to resume Thursday, Sept. 5. Thursday, Aug. 29, 9:00 a.m.

Embry-Riddle Leadership to Announce Hurricane Plan for its Daytona Beach Campus by 4:00 p.m. Today

To ensure the safety of its students, staff and faculty, the Emergency Operations Team at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus is working closely with faculty meteorologists and authorities to develop a Hurricane Dorian action plan, which will be announced no later than 4:00 p.m. today.

As of 5:00 a.m., the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was reporting that dangerous storm surge, hurricane-force winds and heavy rains are likely to affect Florida’s east coast by the weekend. NOAA’s 5:00 a.m. advisory emphasized, however, that “it is too soon to determine where these hazards will occur.”

The Embry-Riddle Emergency Operations Team is committed to announcing a decision regarding campus closures as quickly as possible to ensure that everyone on the Daytona Beach Campus as well as the nearby Worldwide Campus headquarters has sufficient time to implement an evacuation plan. With the storm continuing to evolve as of this writing, additional information is rapidly being gathered to determine the safest course of action for our community.

A plan will be posted to the Embry-Riddle Newsroom as well as the University’s internal web portal (ERNIE) and the Daytona Beach Campus Facebook page by 4:00 p.m.

Students are strongly encouraged to inform and stay in frequent contact with their parents, and vice versa.

Additional resources are listed below, for students residing both on and off-campus, and their families:
