Representatives from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) were recently recognized for their work promoting evidence-based teaching practices.

The Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network granted Drs. Lori Mumpower, Kim Chambers, Amy Cicchino, Teha Cooks, Claudia Cornejo Happel and Chad Rohrbacher its 2023 Innovation Award, recognizing the team’s project — titled “Small Teaching, Big Results: Leveraging Department Chairpersons to Improve Teaching and Learning” — which leveraged department chairs and interdepartmental competition to encourage the implementation of small teaching practices.

“This project is particularly exciting because it encouraged departmental collaboration to achieve the adoption of easy-to-implement teaching practices, and the team connected with institutional assessment to provide participants with student feedback,” said Eva Dobler, the POD Network’s Innovation Award chair.

The POD Network received 18 submissions in this year’s competition, and five finalists were selected among them. The CTLE’s work stood out to the judges due, in part, to how it successfully engaged a large number of faculty members. The award was granted at the annual POD Network’s conference earlier this month.

Since its inception in 1986, the Innovation Award has constituted one of the POD Network’s highest honors. The award recognizes the achievements of POD Network members who have developed and implemented creative ideas to improve teaching and learning, as well as enhance the effectiveness of educational development, both in their institutions and in the field of educational development. The POD Network bestows the award to not only honor its recipients, but also inspire members to share their ideas with colleagues around the country.
