Dr. Saman Farhangdoust, assistant professor of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has been named the recipient of the New NDT Professional Recognition by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). This prestigious recognition honors early-career professionals whose professional achievement demonstrates exceptional standards, innovation and service in the field of nondestructive testing.

“Receiving the award is both a great honor and a meaningful milestone in my professional journey. This recognition is particularly significant to me because it extends beyond technical achievement to include innovation, service and active engagement within the nondestructive testing community. This award reflects the collective impact of my research at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University,” said Farhangdoust, who is also the director of the Smart and Multifunctional Meta-Structures research group, which advances smart meta-structures for structural health monitoring of aircraft and spacecraft. “The award motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of research while mentoring and inspiring the next generation of engineers and researchers.”

Nondestructive testing refers to the evaluation, without causing damage, of a wide range of structures, components and systems. The testing is performed on equipment ranging from industrial boilers to bridges, ensuring their safety, reliability and efficiency. Using advanced methods such as radiographic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic testing, it is employed in aerospace, construction, manufacturing and energy, among other industries.

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing annually honors an individual for science contributions, career achievement and advancement, service to the organization, peer recognition and public support. Farhangdoust has also been named the vice chair of the ASNT Research Council, a two-year appointment that leads to a position as council chair.
