Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University flight instructor Rafael Dubena has been named the FAA’s 2026 Flight Instructor of the Year for the Orlando District.

Dubena, an instructor pilot and check airman in the Flight Training Department of the College of Aviation on the Daytona Beach Campus, earned the honor through the FAA’s General Aviation Awards program. The program, a collaborative effort between the FAA and the aviation industry, recognizes aviation professionals for their contributions to flight instruction, aviation maintenance, avionics and flight safety.

“I’m truly honored and grateful,” said Dubena, who was presented the award at a March 12 event at Orlando Executive Airport. “Being recognized by the Orlando Flight Standards District Office means a lot to me, especially knowing the quality of instructors in our region. It is very rewarding to see the meaningful work we do with our students recognized in this way.”

As an instructor pilot, Dubena mentors, develops and evaluates fellow flight instructors while ensuring that Embry-Riddle’s training and safety protocols are upheld. He plays a critical role in reinforcing high standards and ensuring consistency across the training environment. In addition to instructing students in the flight deck and classroom, he supports ongoing safety initiatives and helps guide instructors as they develop their teaching skills.

“Rafael represents the very best of Embry-Riddle’s instructional community,” said Dr. Kenneth Byrnes, professor of Aeronautical Science, Flight Department chair and assistant dean of the College of Aviation. “His professionalism, depth of experience and steady commitment to mentoring others set him apart.”

"What makes Rafael exceptional is not just his technical skill, but his genuine investment in the growth of both students and fellow instructors. This recognition is well deserved and reflects the aviation leader he is,” Byrnes added.

Dubena’s recognition also highlights the strength of Embry-Riddle’s flight training program, where safety, consistency and student success are top priorities. Faculty and instructors work closely with students from their first flight through advanced certifications, preparing them for careers across the aviation industry.

As the Orlando District awardee, Dubena is now under consideration for national recognition by the General Aviation Awards program.
