Embry-Riddle’s Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) — Advanced class is a professional education course offered virtually to professionals across the globe.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is excited to announce the launch of the HFACS (or the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System) – Advanced class. Developed to meet the demands of evolving industry needs, the new professional education course provides training in proactive safety tools and data analytics for application in the safety management industry.

The HFACS - Advanced course goes beyond the basic concepts of HFACS and the Human Factors Intervention Matrix (HFIX) introductory course. Participants will learn how to leverage proactive safety tools and data analytics to enhance effectiveness of operations, identify potential hazards and develop effective safety interventions. The interactive, six-hour course will be offered virtually over one business day and is geared toward professionals across a spectrum of industries.

“Over the past two decades, we have been called upon by clients to provide a variety of proactive tools and assistance with data analysis,” said Dr. Scott Shappell, co-developer of HFACS and chair/professor of Human Factors and Systems at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus. “While doing that, we have built up a rather large toolbox of additional tools and techniques. We are excited to partner with Embry-Riddle to bring those tools to all our clients in a one-day, online Advanced HFACS Workshop.”

The unique HFACS Framework was developed by Shappell along with Dr. Douglas Wiegmann, associate chair for Graduate Affairs and professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Over the past five years, more than 1,000 professionals and hundreds of companies have become experienced in applying HFACS to their organization through training offered by HFACS Inc. and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. As the framework became integrated into industries, a need was identified to offer additional training in enhanced proactive and investigatory tools, which led to the development of HFACS – Advanced.

“We are excited to partner with HFACS Inc. to offer training in advanced HFACS proactive and investigatory tools,” said Sarah Ochs, director of Professional Programs at Embry-Riddle. “As leaders in higher education, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is equipped to deliver and support this training, and we’re honored to do so in the pursuit of enhanced safety management. Our goal is to be a source for innovation and excellence in aviation and aerospace education.”

Embry-Riddle’s Professional Education courses are the product of the collective insight, experience and expertise of the university’s world-class faculty and staff. Courses promote industry best practices and provide students with opportunities to learn through interactive activities and analysis of real-world case studies.

The HFACS-Advanced course is recommended as a follow-on course to the HFACS course, and both options can be completed as electives toward completion of the Certificate of Management in Aircraft Accident Investigation.
