Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus Earns Prestigious Carnegie Recognition for Research Accomplishments

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has awarded Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University its Research 2 (R-2) status, reflecting strategic research spending and Ph.D. production.
The R-2 designation, which signifies that Embry-Riddle devotes at least $5 million to research spending and awards 20 doctorates each year, represents the attainment of one of Embry-Riddle’s strategic initiatives and signals its commitment to the pursuit of research with impact locally and across the globe. Attaining this status enables Embry-Riddle to attract more top-tier faculty, invites greater collaboration with other institutions and agencies, increases research opportunities, and elevates engagement with community and industry partners — all of which ultimately benefit Embry-Riddle’s students.
“Attaining R-2 status highlights our efforts to grow Embry-Riddle’s research contributions and will further enhance our ability to attract top faculty and doctoral students conducting cutting-edge research in aviation, aerospace, technology and other select scientific disciplines,” said Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler, Ph.D. “This is only the latest step forward as we join our peer institutions designated as top-tier research universities.”
Senior Vice President and Provost Kelly Austin, Ph.D., said that “becoming an R-2 institution helps us not only to recruit, develop and retain premier faculty talent — it is a significant advantage for students who choose to attend our institution.”
Embry-Riddle’s strategic investments in key research areas — including aviation and aerospace safety, security and uncrewed aerial systems, among other aerospace innovations — have fueled a dynamic research ecosystem dedicated to advancing the frontiers of these critical fields.
Dr. Jeremy Ernst, vice president for Research and Doctoral Programs, lauded the university’s faculty members and students for helping the university attain R-2 status. “Achieving this distinction in research is a collective triumph, credited to our world-class faculty who push the boundaries of innovation and progress each day,” he said.
In addition to on-campus research and development, Embry-Riddle’s cutting-edge Research Park facilitates and fosters collaborations with industry partners, enabling the university to remain at the forefront of technological advancements. The Research Park serves as a hub for innovation, where faculty and students work closely with industry experts to develop solutions that address real-world challenges.
Embry-Riddle remains steadfast in its pursuit of groundbreaking research and its mission to shape the future of aviation and aerospace. Embry-Riddle’s strategic focus on research excellence, industry collaboration and faculty talent ensures that it will continue to lead in these vital fields and contribute to advancements that benefit society as a whole.
