CDC, ERAU Update Guidelines on Face Coverings

Wear a mask so that it covers both your mouth and nose.

In keeping with updated recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University strongly recommends wearing face coverings with two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric that completely cover your mouth as well as your nose and fit snugly against your face, with no gaps.

Recent research has raised serious questions about whether neck gaiters, bandanas and masks with exhalation valves effectively help prevent the spread of Covid-19. The CDC currently advises caution for anyone considering a neck gaiter or a face shield when not used in combination with a mask.

Embry-Riddle recommends multi-layered cloth face coverings that fit and are worn properly by everyone, including those with beards.

Neck gaiters, bandanas or “cowboy scarves” and masks with exhalation valves should be avoided at this time because they may provide insufficient protection. In addition, do not wear N95 respirators or other masks that may be urgently needed by healthcare workers.

Avoid masks made of vinyl or other unbreathable fabrics. Never put a mask on a child under the age of two.

Always wash or sanitize your hands before putting on or removing your face covering. To take off your mask, grab it by the ear loops or ties only. Avoid touching your face. Wash your face covering regularly – ideally in a washing machine at the highest heat setting.

Face coverings remain mandatory in all common areas, both inside and outside, on Embry-Riddle’s campuses.

Face coverings may be removed only if –

  • You are taking part in an organized, supervised, required group activity (i.e., cross country running or PT), under Embry-Riddle or ROTC supervision.
    • These activities will take place on the perimeter of campus or within designated areas, including gymnasiums. In those cases, physical-distancing guidelines will be in place, and coaches, observers and other non-participants will need to wear face coverings.
    • As soon as the organized activity ends or you leave the designated area, resume wearing your face covering immediately.
Face coverings may also be removed by students in their residence hall rooms and employees working alone in private offices (not cubicles), behind closed doors.
