Embry-Riddle Stands Strong With Orlando

Official ERAU Seal

Dear University Community: There are really no words one can offer to convey the feelings we have for the senseless loss of precious lives in Orlando early Sunday morning. Those of us at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University realize how close Orlando is to Daytona Beach, but proximity is not the issue—it is how close in age, background, and experiences these victims are to our students and to young adults the world over. With sadness we imagine what was ahead of them in their futures.

Our universities are very special places with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff who come from every background, religion, and lifestyle and we are stronger as we work together among the many different cultures. Hate simply has no place in our environment. When we see it played out with such a devastating outcome in our community, state, and nation, we have a hard time beginning to comprehend the pain, even if we don’t know those who lost or are holding onto their lives.

We grieve with their families and friends and hope that some peace may come from knowing that this grief is shared among countless individuals the world over who deeply care.

The Daytona Beach Campus of Embry-Riddle will hold a memorial vigil at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 16, in the Center for Faith and Spirituality. The campus also has made counseling services available at the Wellness Center Complex from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please call (386) 226-6035 or (386) 226-6027 for more information.

Sincerely,
Dr. Karen A. Holbrook
