Embry-Riddle's Golden Eagles Soar at SAFECON

The Golden Eagles flight team came in third overall in a field of 27 collegiate teams. The team won national championships in 1993, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Golden Eagles flight team from the Prescott, Ariz., campus placed third in the nation for the second year in a row in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s annual Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition May 16-21.

The university’s Daytona Beach, Fla., team, the Eagles, placed sixth out of the 27 colleges in attendance at the national flight meet, hosted this year by Ohio State University.

The Golden Eagles won national championships in 1993, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008. The Eagles placed second in 2009 and 2010 and won the national championship in 1992.

SAFECON brings together more than 300 college students from across the country every year to compete against each other for the title of national champions.

For the Golden Eagles, Andrew Voss placed first in the Computer Accuracy event and William Jacobson and Brendan Vinchesi placed second in the Navigation event. The Eagles placed four of their contenders in the top 10 in the Aircraft Recognition event, including Phil Rademacher, who took first place.

Both Andrew Nelson, of the Golden Eagles, and Sherman Carll, of the Eagles, won Outstanding Team Member on their teams.

The Southern Illinois University and University of North Dakota flight teams took the first and second positions, and the Golden Eagles finished with a total score of 271, which placed them directly in third.
