Models of EfficiencyEmbry-Riddle Aeronautical University is one of nine colleges and universities nationwide recently honored by University Business magazine as a Model of Efficiency for streamlining operations through technology.

One initiative that earned Embry-Riddle the designation was its shift from paper to digital orientation packets, according to Registrar M.J. Caro. When Caro joined Embry-Riddle in 2012, she and Associate Registrar AbdulAziz Al-Hajeri transitioned to a spreadsheet-based system, and then to online check-in forms accessible via iPad.

“By having all relevant departments on-site for a massive advising and registration session, there was a lot less moving back and forth and from building to building” says Caro. “We created an orientation checklist form for the orientation leaders and, upon check-in, the students were given this form as their ‘to-do’ list during the event.”

The change eliminated long lines and lost paperwork at orientation, shifted the role of orientation leaders from paper-pushers to ambassadors and saved the school $21,000 in paper and labor costs.

“First impressions are vital when creating a positive brand experience,” said University Business Senior Editor Tim Goral. “Simplifying orientation for new students puts them at ease by demonstrating the competency and professionalism of the university they are attending — as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Records and Registration department demonstrates.”

The Models of Efficiency program is sponsored by Higher One, which offers technological services such as performance analytics, financial aid refund processes, tuition payment plans and more.
