President John P. Johnson spoke about Embry-Riddle's growth in his Aug. 18 State of the University Address.

The passion of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s staff and faculty, continuing physical growth on campus and in the Research Park and cementing the institution’s place as a leader in innovation were just a few of the themes echoed by Embry-Riddle President Dr. John P. Johnson on Monday during the annual State of the University presentation for faculty and staff.

“Passion. It’s in everything we do,” Johnson said to a packed ICI Center at the Daytona Beach Campus. “The heart and soul [of the university] is the people.”

The presentation included Board of Trustee Vice Chairman Jim Henderson and several updates from Cabinet members representing External Relations and the Research Park (Lou Seno) and Marketing, Communications and Enrollment (Bill Hampton). A Daytona Beach Campus faculty/staff update from Chief Academic Officer Dr. Richard Heist was immediately following.

Dr. Johnson will present the State of the University address on the Prescott, Ariz., campus on Sept. 12. The Worldwide address will take place Sept. 25 in Orlando, Fla. Some of the highlights reflecting on the 2013 fiscal year and what’s next included:

  • In the 10 years that Dr. Johnson has been at Embry-Riddle, the university has more than doubled the amount of degree programs it offers, including five doctoral degrees.

  • To this date, six faculty members have been awarded the National Science Foundation Career Award.

  • Research Park development will include consolidation of some on-campus facilities in conjunction with proposals to partner with some of the world’s most prominent engineering, aviation, aerospace and technological companies.  The goal being to establish a Research Park that’s not only based in knowledge discovery, but pairs Embry-Riddle students, faculty and staff with the innovations of tomorrow.

  • The introduction of new Chief Information Officer Becky Vasquez and announcement of new Chief Financial Officer Randy Howard (starting Sept. 2).

  • The announcement of an expansion in the President’s Speaker Series with host Mark Bernier.

  • Prescott Campus new student enrollment is expected to increase by 8% this fall, while Daytona Beach has grown nearly 15%

  • Incoming students represent 49 states and more than 60 countries.
