For the 29th year in a row, Embry-Riddle Prescott’s Golden Eagles Flight Team dominated the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) regional competition with overall first-place victories. SAFECON is a national competition that brings together more than 300 students from 30 colleges and universities from across the country to vie for team and individual pilot honors.

The competition develops and advances aviation education through a strong emphasis on aviation safety. The Golden Eagles Flight Team now advances to the finals, to be held May 9-14, 2016, at The Ohio State University Airport.

The Golden Eagles participated in the Region II competition, which included a total of seven teams from Arizona and California and was hosted at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Seven students won individual awards and the team finished first overall.

“I’m proud of the work ethic, team unity and self-sacrifice our team members demonstrate not just at competitions but throughout the year as they prepare to compete against the best collegiate flight teams in the country,” said head coach Jerry Kidrick. “The Golden Eagles Flight Team represents the best aspects of the Embry-Riddle Prescott Campus student body and highlights the tradition of excellence that is the hallmark of our flight program.”

The team will now build on their success at the regional competition and use the lessons learned to make improvements while focusing their efforts on winning their 10th national championship.

“We won by scoring the highest amount of points at regionals since 2011,” said Golden Eagles team captain Victor Griffin. “That being said, we will make sure we stay focused and increase our efforts as the greatest challenge will come in May in Ohio. Winning the national title never has, and never will be, an easy thing to do.”

The National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) was established to develop and advance aviation education; to promote, encourage and foster safety in aviation; to promote and foster communications and cooperation between aviation students, educators, educational institutions and the aviation industry; and to provide an arena for collegiate aviation competition.
